minor characters

Despite the reams of gossip pages they fill up, actresses are still minor characters in Bollywood.

A case in point are two movies, one a certified blockbuster and the second certified to be one.

The former is Lage Raho Munabhai. Sanju, Arshad and Boman were retained. But the director conveniently snipped off poor Gracie from the script. Im not trying to level any charges, the viewers (including me) did not miss her. But the inescapable fact was that despite being the female lead in the previous production, her character was considered too inconsequential to be retained.

Facing a similar fate is Tabu in Phir Hera Pheri . Funny considering that Sunil Shetty was apparently very serious about her. But he is retained and she forgotten.

Actresses are fine working, independent professionals in real life. But despite being powerful public figures, they openly face the glass ceiling too.
